 Romcoms

Romcoms are a mix of romantic and comedy movies. The target audience for Romcoms is females. This is because of their supposed “lighthearted nature”. In addition, the audience could also consist of teenagers ages 13-20 as most romcom movies are set to take place in high school, or even not so serious film fans who simply want a break from reality.

The different types of characters in Romcoms include the cool guy, the quirky/clumsy/nerdy girl, the popular girl, the bully, the rich and poor, etc. There is no set location for Romcoms, but a lot of them take place in a high school to involve a bunch of cliques and are typically very bright to show how happy the movie is supposed to be. A lot of times, Romcoms takes place in a city, coffee shop, a park, a beach, etc. Some techniques that are used for Romcoms are the perfect song during the kiss, editing, over the shoulder shot, mid shot, panning shot, etc. In addition, these movies are typically marketed through social media (as it typically does not take more than 24 hours for news to travel), podcasts, interviews especially in Peoples TV, having it been produced by Netflix, etc.

There are different types of narratives under the genre of romcoms, but the most common one is boy meets girl, boy messes up, boy and girl realize that they are meant to be together and get back together, the end. The main characters are often vastly different in social classes, cliques, etc. for juxtaposition. Film samples under this genre are "Little Italy", "Holidate", "Crazy Stupid Love", "Never Been Kissed", "Hitch", and "10 Things I Hate About You".

The movie Hitch is a romcom as it uses several mid shots, takes place in a big city like New York Coty, contains a “meet cute,” has the “will they, or won't they?” theme, etc. The movie Little Italy is considered a Romcom as it takes place in a small city, it has the “will, or won’t they?” theme, has a meet Cute, contains at least one over the shoulder shot, and has a cute and perfect song during the kiss that the audience has been waiting for from the beginning.
