Production Company Name!

Production Company Name!

My partner (Isa) and I have decided on our production company name! We wanted to have a creative name but also wanted to have one that would be personal and represent our project and group members. We were thinking of doing something with our names. Some of our options are listed below...

IsaSabri

StaabNovarini

StaaNov

NovaStaab

We have decided to go with NovaStaab because we like the way it sounds. It sounds somewhat official: A NovaStaab Production. The film opening will start with a black screen and then we will use a 24ft Billy Ohio font to display our company name. We will likely use the same font to display the production name LOVE SHACK (in all caps) but we have spoken about making it more stiff, so who knows.

Update on filming

So this week has been productive as far as filming goes but it’s also my last break before the crazy testing season that will begin for me in 3 weeks and end June 2nd. My partner and I got the individual filming done and will finish filming (the beach scene) next weekend. Overall, the filming process was very fast because we had planned a lot of stuff ahead of time. For instance, we did a storyboard and script. We have planned for the entire film opening so it should be no different for the beach scene where the two meet.

I was thinking of editing the two scenes we have right now this weekend so that I don’t have to worry about editing the final video. Unfortunately this week has gone by very fast and I haven’t had a chance to even start editing. We are currently planning times for next weekend to film so I will update you on that!

STARTED FILMING!!!

As you can see in the title of this post, I finally started filming today! I shot all of Ricky's scenes except for the ones at the beach as those need to be shot with both April and Ricky there together. Because I had made a script, it was a lot easier to film than I expected and we were done within 35 minutes! I really enjoyed the way it came out!

I can always go back and re-film some scenes, but for now I think we're good. My brother (named Lucas) did a pretty good job at remembering his lines and although there were some funny bloopers, it was a productive and effective shooting day. I am proud with the way it came out. I filmed extra because it's always better to have more than less and even did individual voice recordings for each line so that if necessary, we can use the video and replace the audio with the voice memos one. This is another sneak peak!!

Set Design: CHECK!

All of the props arrived and I finally finished setting up the room! My dad even had some old posters and records that he let me borrow for filming purposes. Overall, the room looks better than I expected and I am very excited to begin filming. My brother (who is playing Ricky) already put together a schedule for filming tomorrow! We will add some last minute props if necessary but are planning to film from about 1:00 pm till 2:15 pm. I attached some pictures of the set design below!

I'll update you on the process tomorrow!

SNEAK PEAK!!!

Isa (my partner) is currently in Argentina so she filmed right before leaving. I am filming this upcoming week and we will edit together when she gets back after having filmed the "meet cute" scene. Isa used one of her friends as an actress and filmed the scenes with April. Everything looked great with the set design. Luckily since we had planned so intensively, it did not take her very long. These is a sneak peaks!

I just ordered everything for filming purposes and I am excited. Everything comes by Wednesday so I will hopefully be done filming by Thursday. This is what I ordered.

Group Feedback 101

Yesterday was an early release day, and as a result not many people showed up to class. This actually made it the perfect opportunity for group feedback. I was put in a group with Logan, Vanessa, Owen and Jimena. Everybody had very interesting ideas which made mine seem very dull but nobody has planned as much as my partner and I have which made me feel a little bit better.

Somebody is doing a horror movie and someone else is doing something about somebody who can see how somebody was going to die, but if they tell them, somebody they care about will die. I am definitely missing one, but the last one I can think of was one about a person who is schizophrenic and battling three personalities. Overall, everybody said that they thought my 80's Romcom was a good idea and although it was basic compared to there's, it was well thought out. I was the only one who did a storyboard, moodboard and/or script.

I thought I was behind on production but only one person so far has started production and even then, unfortunately all her videos were accidentally deleted. I thought I was going to be the only one who was planning on catching up on filming over spring break but I guess I was wrong.

Love Shack: The Song

I forgot to write about this last week, but my partner (Isa) and I wrote to the managing team of the B-52s (info@crushmalibu.com) asking if we could use part of the song titled Love Shack in our film opening. We wrote to them last Friday via Isa's email and I was BCCd. There has not been a response back as of right now, but I will update you if and when we are emailed back. I am really hoping that the managing team responds (and soon) because it would really complete our film opening. It's literally the name of the film. It's a great idea but if they do not respond, we will need to find another upbeat song. I took a screenshot of the email and it is attached below.

Unfortunately, these last few weeks have been crazy and it's been hard to find a time to film. I have been keeping up with blog posts but I have also been dealing with SAT's, cumulative exams, after school mock AICE exams, etc. I wanted to film this past weekend, but things go too hectic with it being the last week of the quarter and teachers trying to cram in last minute exams. I am shooting over break and will use my brother as the actor which makes it a bit more accessible since I see him everyday.

Update on script writing

My partner (Isa) and I created the script to simply write down the dialogue between the characters but knew that it was completely different than from an authentic movie script. We decided that since we were learning how to create a film opening, we wanted to learn how to do every step of the way (correctly). So, I did some research regarding the format for movie scripts and used that knowledge to edit my script.

I learned that a script should have the text in a 1 in. margin when describing the scene and/or stage directions, the name of the character in bold and all caps in 3.7 in. margin and the dialogue should be in a 2.5 in. margin. In addition, you should describe the scene and explain whether it's interior (INT.) or exterior (EXT). All of this should be in 12 point courier font and stage direction should be in bold and italicized.

SCRIPT!!!

We finally completed our script! It may be subject to change, but overall we have a pretty good plan for our film opening. We decided not to include much dialogue between Ricky/ April and their friends because we do not think that we will have enough time to fit everything in it. We might even have to cut some dialogue in the beginning when the two are on the phone. I am a bit worried on time but worse case, we can always edit the script to better fit the time limit.

As production goes, my partner (Isa) and I need to film the beginning scenes separately. She will take care of April's scene and I will be in charge of Ricky's scene. I think I will shoot my parts on Sunday and worse case, we get off for break next week, so I can work on it then.

Storyboard!

We finally got the storyboard done! We changed a few things from the original plan. Go back to the post from yesterday (March 6th 2022) so see the original plan that we added on to for the storyboard! I am very excited to start shooting! I think we might need to film on our own for a few days until we can meet in person to film because we both are busy during the week and have family trips for the next two weekends.

Also, the drawings were a bit difficult to draw, so we ended up just drawing stick figures towards the end. We will be writing out script in the next day or two but it should not take long since there is some dialogue in the storyboard. Here is the storyboard. It is uploaded as a pdf, so you need to click on the link to open it.

PRODUCTION PLANNING

My partner (Isa) and I have agreed on an outline for the film opening. We have already decided to do an 80's Romcom, but now have planned out the scenes to shoot. Our idea is to take a more modern approach to a romantic comedy but make it take place in the 1980's. Our film is going to open with a black screen saying the production name (still haven't agreed on a name yet but might do something with our names) and then transition to a split phone call like they have in Mean Girls with Regina George, Gretchen, Karen, and Cady. The video of the phone call scene can be accessed here

Iconic Mean Girls Phone Call Scene Remade By Creators With Disabilities

The split phone call will include April and Ricky but they will each be talking to their friends who are trying to set them up with some of their friends and their response will be something along the lines of "I want to meet someone the classic way." I do not know yet if I want their friends in it or if I simply want to use a voiceover for that scene. Or maybe, their voice isn't even heard, it's just April and Ricky's responses that are heard. Eventually, the guy's screen will take over the camera and will show the props used to decorate his room in showing it through a POV shot.  The screen will then go back to a split screen. In addition, the girl's screen will take over to say goodbye to her friend (as Ricky's is doing the same) and then show the props in her room. There could be a tracking shot of Ricky's as he is leaving his room to go to the beach and shows him picking up his skateboard. Then, there could be a POV shot of April getting on her bike changing to a tracking shot of her bike riding. In addition, there could be a reversed tracking shot for Ricky's as he is skating towards the camera. The camera can then show the girl reading or getting in the water with her friend and can show the boy dabbing up his friends. There could be a split screen of both characters explaining to their friends that they're going to get snacks or drinks in the snack shack and it shows the two characters walking past each other and then the name of the production can little by little come up in the gap between them. The guy can be clueless and say "oops wrong way" and he runs into her direction where they bump into each other. The opening can then stop when he puts his hand out for her to get up.

Update on production process

My partner and I want to be able to begin filming our project soon. Unfortunately, I am out of town this weekend visiting family and when break starts in about a week and half, she will be visiting family in Argentina, which leaves little time for us to shoot. We are thinking of getting together either Thursday or Friday after school because I have a mock exam on Wednesday after school for AICE Info Tech and cannot manage to spend any time from here to then not studying. We both have a pretty solid idea for our storyboard, but have not had a chance to put it together yet. We will work on the storyboard in class on Monday and when we are done, either Monday (or Wednesday) in class we can work on the script. There is not much talking going on, except for a few friend scenes, but that will be worked out in the next week.

LOVE SHACK?

My partner (Isa) and I  are deciding on what the title of the film should be and we are leading with Love Shack. Yes, it sounds very cheesy, but that's what Romcoms are! We could also have some fun and hide the name of the title in the movie such as it being the title of a book or have 2 books next to each other (one called "love" and one called "shack"). The title reminds me of a lyric in the song "Everybody Talks" but my Isa said it reminds her of a song called Love Shack by the B-52s and she is interested in emailing their managing team so that we could use that song in the background. I am enjoying the song so far. The song can be accessed here: Love Shack song and in my opinion it would be great for a scene at the beach with maybe a group of friends playing with a volleyball or beach ball. In addition, the band we were thinking of having there at the beach could be performing this song? There is a student band that performed at Coffee House at school a few weeks ago that I might be able to convince to work with us. There's a cover I also saw on youtube with the electric guitar which was pretty cool- you can see it here electric guitar love shack cover Just an idea, but we will talk more about it in the next week.
