Indie Rock!!!

Indie Rock!!!
By Sabrina Staab

What is Indie Rock?

Indie Rock is a music genre that is most often referred to as "independent rock".  It originated in both the United States and the United Kingdom in the 1970's. "Indie rock" is a broad term used to classify rock artists who are either unsigned or working with a minor label.

The idea with indie rock was that anybody could start a band - typically college students. After starting the band, they would learn to play together,  and then release albums/tour around the country. There can be different styles of indie rock depending on where the artists originated. Overall, the independent nature of the genre allows for more exploring/discovery to occur since there is more creative freedom. One example of this genre is the song "Mountain at my Gates" (by the band FOALS) which expresses that life is full of uncertainties, but that's what makes it interesting: the not knowing what is coming next.

The project

Description

The project we are currently working on is to create a new band for the song, a music video, and offer marketing techniques. This will be done to the song mentioned earlier "Mountain at My Gates".

Challenges that have presented themselves while working on the project so far.

Because our group consists of several leaders, everybody was opinionated at first and it took a while to get on the same page for the planning of the project. However, we were able to successfully plan out our project in time for the individual assignments to be turned in on time.

Additionally, everybody in our group has intense schedules; whether it involves studying and doing homework for AP/AICE classes, working, family plans, school fields trips, extracurriculars, etc. This makes it hard to plan what days would work best for working on the project together outside of school. Although, we have not been able to meet up outside of school, our group has been able to communicate through "Whatsapp" and through a document we have created on Powerpoint for the slideshow in which everybody can and will pitch in when they can (since it's on Onedrive). We also have slides specifically for planning purposes where anybody can write down ideas that pop into their head before they forget.

Creating a name for the artist(s) was a bit difficult because everybody had different ideas and as a result, there was controversy in picking one that everybody agreed with. We finally decided on the name "SATIRE". The definition of satire is the use of humor, exaggeration, etc. to criticize people's stupidity. This ended up working perfectly because although it is not the "tough" name you would picture when thinking about a rock band (indie but still rock), the definition sums up what we thought would go under a genre related to rock.

Next, we need to complete our video and editing. There are a couple of shots that may be trickier to shoot, but overall, I am excited for filming along with presenting and seeing everybody else's presentations.
